Stephen F. Stringham, PhD

Stephen Stringham was born in Colorado, spending his early years at his father’s gold mine on Sugarloaf Mountain, west of Boulder, back in the days when the area had more mountain lions than people.  At age twelve, he moved with his family to central California, where he soon discovered a fortune in gold whose value at modern prices would be roughly $10 million.

After earning his BSc degree in Biological Oceanography and Marine Ecology, he went on to earn his MSc and Ph.D. degrees studying the behavioral and population ecology of Alaskan moose, European elk (red deer), European mountain goats (chamois), roe deer, and bears. From that time to the present, his research has focused on mother-offspring relations, communication, aggression, roles of adult males, and predator-prey relations.

He later founded WildWatch, an educational services company that engages in basic and applied research, as well as consulting on wildlife issues, and producing educational materials (mainly books and videos) related to wildlife ecology and behavior.  He occasionally teaches university courses and tutors K-12 students in math and science.

Along with his wife and soul mate Jacqueline, he has lived and worked in several Native American communities in Montana and Alaska.  They are deeply interested in Indigenous Science. All of his activities promote bear conservation – for which he raises funding through writing and selling videos and books, including this one as well as guiding bear viewers and serving as an expert witness in court cases.

Further information about Dr. Stringham is available on his website www.GoBearViewing.com and at his Facebook site Bear Viewing Association.  Many of his scientific journal articles and reports can be read on that site.  His books can also be previewed there by clicking on the “Books & Videos” tab at the top right of the home page.  Information on his courses and consulting is also provided there.
