Inside Underground UFO Sightings

By Howard Callahan, Ufologist
When we think about UFOs, our gaze naturally turns upward. We scan the skies for strange lights, metallic discs, or triangular craft moving in impossible ways through our atmosphere. But what if we've been looking in the wrong direction all along? What if the most significant UFO activity isn't happening above our heads, but beneath our feet and under our oceans?
For decades, witnesses have reported objects that don't just fly through air, but seamlessly transition into water, disappear into mountainsides, or move at physics-defying speeds beneath the ocean surface. These reports come not just from civilians but from military personnel, pilots, and government officials who've tracked these phenomena with sophisticated equipment.
The U.S. government itself seems to acknowledge this possibility. In 2022, the Pentagon officially changed its terminology from "Unidentified Aerial Phenomena" to simply "Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena" – specifically to include objects operating underwater and transitioning between mediums. This subtle shift represents a significant recognition that whatever these objects are, they're not confined to our atmosphere.
From the alleged seven-level facility beneath Dulce, New Mexico, to mysterious structures detected beneath the ocean floor near California, to reported entrances in the Antarctic ice – the world beneath us might harbor secrets far stranger than anything we've imagined in the stars above.
The Dulce Base: Seven Levels of Secrecy
In the shadow of Archuleta Mesa, straddling the Colorado-New Mexico border, lies the small town of Dulce on the Jicarilla Apache reservation. This remote location, home to only about 3,000 people, has become ground zero for perhaps the most elaborate underground UFO narrative in American history.
The story began in the late 1970s with Paul Bennewitz, an Albuquerque businessman with connections to nearby Kirtland Air Force Base. Bennewitz became convinced he was intercepting electronic communications from alien spacecraft. By the early 1980s, his investigations led him to believe he had discovered something far more significant: a vast underground facility near Dulce where extraterrestrial beings worked alongside human military personnel.
"Bennewitz became convinced he was intercepting electronic communications from alien spacecraft and installations outside of Albuquerque," our research materials note. "By the 1980s he believed he had discovered a secret underground base near Dulce populated by grey aliens and humans."
According to the most detailed versions of this theory, the Dulce facility consists of seven underground levels extending deep into the Earth. Former reservation police detective Avery Tafoya claims he once discovered sketches in tribal police files describing "a seven-level deep laboratory managed by humans and aliens, where twisted genetic experiments aiming at creating hybrid organisms were carried out."
Tafoya told investigators: "I had an elderly lady tell me they were actually sitting outside and they could hear this and the ground was actually shaking." He added that his theory was "it was obviously coming from underground."
The alleged layout includes specific functions for each level, with the deepest sections reportedly housing the most disturbing activities. Level 7, according to these accounts, contains laboratories for genetic experimentation, including the creation of human-animal hybrids and the study of human consciousness.
Residents of Dulce have reported unusual phenomena that some connect to the alleged underground base. Jicarilla elder Geri Julian described a terrifying encounter in 1986 when she and her husband observed "an extremely bright light with a dome on top" while driving. Their truck's engine failed, and they witnessed "two small people climbing down a ladder." Later that night, Julian claims she woke to find the same beings at the foot of her bed, trying to pull her off while she was paralyzed and unable to scream.
"I couldn't scream," Julian recounted. "I was holding on to the mattress and they were trying to pull me off. And then my husband moved and then they let me go."
The region has indeed experienced unexplained cattle mutilations. New Mexico State Trooper Gabriel Valdez investigated numerous cases in the late 1970s and claimed to have found a bizarre hybrid creature that "looked like a human, a monkey and a frog" inside one mutilated cow.
Perhaps the most dramatic claim about Dulce comes from Philip Schneider, who said he worked on developing underground bases for the government. Schneider claimed that in 1979, he and his team accidentally drilled into an ancient alien cavern system beneath Dulce. In the ensuing conflict with "Grey" extraterrestrials, he said he was one of only three survivors out of a team of 60 humans. Schneider died in 1996 in what was officially ruled a suicide, though some researchers question this conclusion.
Despite the lack of concrete evidence accepted by mainstream science, the Dulce Base has become deeply embedded in both UFO lore and local culture. Jicarilla Apache Legislative Council president Ty Vicenti has embraced the narrative to stimulate tourism, and the town has hosted UFO conferences at the local casino.
Underwater Alien Bases: The Ocean's Secrets
The world's oceans cover over 70% of our planet's surface, with average depths of more than 12,000 feet. We've mapped less than 20% of the seafloor at high resolution, and explored less than 5% directly. This makes our oceans the perfect hiding place for advanced intelligences seeking to avoid human detection.
One of the most compelling alleged underwater UFO locations lies approximately 6.6 miles off the coast of Malibu, California. Known as Sycamore Knoll, this underwater formation sits about 2,000 feet below the surface at coordinates 34° 1'23.31″N 118° 59'45.64″W. What makes Sycamore Knoll particularly interesting is its distinctive appearance – described as "a bump pushing up from the ocean floor, with a flat, table-like top" that resembles an artificial structure.
Interest in Sycamore Knoll intensified after Google Earth images from 2014 showed detailed views of the formation, but curiously, as of 2025, it appears to have been removed or blurred from the platform. One Reddit post cited in our research noted: "Some refer to it as an anomaly while others believe it is an alien base. It's believed to be between two-and-a-half and three miles wide."
The National UFO sightings have received numerous reports of strange aerial phenomena over this exact area, with some witnesses claiming to have seen craft emerging from or submerging into the ocean without creating the expected splash or disturbance. One California resident reported: "It looked like a massive, cathedral-shaped structure — multiple pointed edges all glowing brilliantly white, heading straight into the ocean. There was no splash, no sound... just a flash, and it was gone."
Another allegedly significant underwater location is near Guadalupe Island, a volcanic formation approximately 241 kilometers off the coast of Baja California. Harvard lawyer and UFO disclosure advocate Danny Sheehan has specifically identified this area (29°1′51″N118°16′48″W) as potentially harboring an alien base "beneath the ocean floor." This location's significance is amplified by its proximity to the famous 2004 USS Nimitz UFO incident, which involved Navy pilots encountering unusual craft exhibiting extraordinary capabilities.
What makes underwater UFO claims particularly compelling is the documented phenomenon of "transmedium" objects – craft that can move seamlessly between air and water. Conventional aircraft or submarines can't transition between these mediums due to the radical differences in pressure, density, and resistance. Yet military sensors have repeatedly captured objects doing exactly this.
In 2004, the USS Nimitz battle group reportedly tracked "over 100 UFOs coming from space and diving into the water" near their position. More recently, footage captured aboard the USS Jackson in 2023 showed what investigative journalist Jeremy Corbell described as a "self-luminous, wingless, tailless craft emerging from the Pacific Ocean."
The U.S. military's growing concern with underwater unidentified phenomena is reflected in their terminology change. Ronald Moultrie, Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and Security, explicitly acknowledged this shift: "This new terminology expands the scope of UAP to include submerged and trans-medium objects. Unidentified phenomena in all domains, whether in the air, ground, sea or space, pose potential threats to personnel security and operations security, and they require our urgent attention."
Military officials have begun speaking more openly about these concerns. Rear Admiral Tim Gallaudet, an oceanographer and former Navy officer, authored a white paper warning that "underwater anomalies jeopardize US maritime security, which is already weakened by our relative ignorance about the global ocean." Congressman Tim Burchett has even claimed that an admiral told him about a massive underwater craft "moving at hundreds of miles per hour" that was "as large as a football field."
The physics of such movement underwater would require technology far beyond current human capabilities. Water creates approximately 800 times more resistance than air, making high-speed underwater travel without cavitation (the formation of vapor cavities in liquid) seemingly impossible with known technology.
Antarctica: The Frozen Frontier
The Antarctic continent represents perhaps the most isolated and inaccessible location on our planet – making it an ideal place to hide something enormous from prying eyes. Reports of strange phenomena beneath the Antarctic ice have circulated for decades, beginning most notably with Admiral Richard Byrd's 1947 expedition.
According to some interpretations of Byrd's statements, the famous explorer discovered "a large opening at the South Pole that went deep inside the Earth ice-free and was inhabited by various sorts of aliens." While mainstream historical accounts don't support these specific claims, rumors persist that "when Byrd got back to the United States, he was brought back to Washington where he was questioned very heavily about his statements. And allegedly he was told to stop talking about this."
More recent and specific claims come from an alleged U.S. Navy flight engineer who served with the Antarctic Development Squadron at McMurdo Station for 14 years. According to investigative reporter Linda Moulton Howe, this individual (referred to only as "Brian") reported several strange encounters in Antarctica during his service.
During a squadron mission in the Transantarctic Mountains, Brian claimed the entire crew saw "a whole bunch of silver darting objects" that were "round" and moving in coordinated patterns between mountain peaks. This might be dismissed as a one-time sighting, except for what allegedly happened next.
While responding to a medical emergency, Brian's aircraft reportedly flew through a designated no-fly zone where they encountered "a huge entrance to a cave but slanted going down." Brian described it as "at least 200 feet in diameter, a big hole in the ice." During this encounter, their instruments malfunctioned: "Our instruments are not operating, we were losing electricity, we had magnetic anomalies."
After completing their medical mission, the crew was allegedly confronted by officials who appeared to be "from Washington, D.C." rather than McMurdo Station personnel. These officials reportedly ordered them "never, ever to fly over that hole" and "never to discuss it again."
Antarctica's extreme isolation makes it nearly perfect for hidden operations. The continent is larger than the United States and Mexico combined, with vast areas that remain essentially unexplored. Its hostile environment naturally limits human presence, and satellite coverage can be complicated by weather conditions and extreme latitude.
Recent years have brought discoveries that demonstrate how major features can remain hidden beneath the ice for extended periods. Lake Vostok, a massive freshwater lake sealed beneath nearly 4 kilometers of ice for potentially 15-25 million years, was only confirmed in the 1990s. What else might remain undiscovered beneath the world's most remote continent?
The Global Underground Network Theory
Many researchers studying underground UFO phenomena suggest that sites like Dulce, Sycamore Knoll, and Antarctic entrances aren't isolated locations but part of a vast, interconnected network of subterranean bases and tunnels spanning the globe. This theory incorporates elements of ancient mythology, modern witness accounts, and some genuinely puzzling archaeological findings.
One intriguing aspect of this theory involves reports of hidden pyramid structures worldwide. In 1992, an underground nuclear explosion on China's Lop Nur test range sent seismic waves through the Earth that allegedly revealed "unexpected geological anomalies" near Anchorage, Alaska. According to Linda Moulton Howe's source, there were "mining shaft elevators on the surface" leading down to "the base of a huge underground pyramid" that was emitting "a gigantic amount of energy."
Similar claims exist about hidden pyramids in China, Wisconsin, and beneath the ocean near Cuba. Perhaps the most scientifically credible of these claims involves Gunung Padang in West Java, Indonesia. Initially thought to be merely a hill with scattered megalithic remains on top, geological surveys have suggested the entire hill might be an artificial stepped structure dating back potentially 20,000 years. Indonesian geologist Danny Hilman Natawidjaja has conducted core drilling, carbon dating, and ground-penetrating radar surveys that indicate artificial structures extend deep into the hill.
Some researchers propose that these various pyramidal structures might function as nodes in a global energy network. As described in some accounts, pyramids might harness and amplify Earth's natural electromagnetic energy. One researcher, Patrick Flanagan, claims measurements showing the Great Pyramid in Egypt produces significantly stronger electrical output (1.2 volts) compared to control measurements taken elsewhere (0.08 volts).
Beyond pyramids, other alleged components of this global underground network include mountain bases and tunnel systems. Secret Mountain in Sedona, Arizona, part of an area that includes Bradshaw Ranch, has been identified by some researchers as another location housing underground facilities. Investigations there reportedly detected unusual electromagnetic frequencies at 1.6 GHz, described as an "interstellar communication signal" normally used only for Earth-to-space communication.
The most ambitious versions of the global underground network theory suggest that entire civilizations might exist beneath the surface, ranging from remnants of ancient human cultures like the legendary Mu or Atlantis to completely non-human societies that evolved separately from surface life.
The Cryptoterrestrial Hypothesis: A Scientific Framework
In June 2024, a team of researchers from Harvard University and Montana Technological University published a paper that sent shockwaves through both UFO research circles and the broader scientific community. Titled "The Cryptoterrestrial Hypothesis: A Case for Scientific Openness to a Concealed Earthly Explanation for Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena," the paper proposed that UFOs might not be from outer space at all, but could originate from intelligent beings already living on Earth – specifically underground or underwater.
The authors, Tim Lomas and Brendan Case from Harvard's Human Flourishing Program and anthropologist Michael Paul Masters from Montana Tech, offered four provocative possibilities:
- A "remnant form" of an ancient, highly advanced human civilization still exists on Earth, observing us from hidden locations
- An intelligent species evolved independently of humans, possibly from "intelligent dinosaurs," and is now hiding their presence
- The hidden occupants of Earth traveled here from another planet or time period and established underground bases
- The mysterious inhabitants could be "less technological than magical," likened to "earthbound angels"
While acknowledging these theories would be "regarded skeptically by most scientists," the authors argued they deserve "consideration in a spirit of epistemic humility and openness."
The paper generated immense attention, with co-author Brendan Case later stating, "I've sworn off any further media engagement related to it. It was pretty overwhelming for a while." This suggests significant pushback from the academic community.
Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of the cryptoterrestrial hypothesis concerns the possibility that UFOs might be piloted not by aliens, but by future humans who have mastered time travel technology. As Michael Masters explains: "We may go on to look like them. Based on our evolutionary characteristics over the last 6 to 8 million years, we are arguably going to have bigger heads, smaller faces, more advanced technology and a lot of these traits are described in association with these beings."
This time-traveler hypothesis addresses one of the persistent puzzles of UFO encounters – why reported aliens often look humanoid, with features that resemble an evolved version of our own species. Instead of assuming parallel evolution on distant planets, this theory proposes a more direct connection.
From a scientific perspective, underground habitation presents significant challenges but isn't impossible. Geothermal energy could provide power, while advanced water recycling and food production systems could sustain life. The Earth's crust contains numerous cave systems, some extending for hundreds of miles, and human technology has already created vast underground complexes like the NORAD facility inside Cheyenne Mountain.
Evidence and Government Response
The field of underground UFO research sits at a complex intersection of compelling witness testimony, limited sensor data, and the inherent challenges of investigating phenomena in hard-to-access environments. This creates an ongoing tension between believers, skeptics, and those seeking middle ground.
Proponents of underground UFO activity point to several categories of evidence:
- Multiple credible witnesses: Military personnel, police officers, and civilians have provided consistent accounts of underground facilities and craft entering/exiting solid surfaces
- Sensor data: Naval radar and sonar systems have tracked objects moving underwater at physically impossible speeds
- Physical traces: Landing marks, radiation readings, and environmental changes at reported entry points
- Electromagnetic effects: Equipment failures and unusual readings near alleged entrance locations
- Pattern consistency: Similar reports across decades and geographic regions suggest a non-random phenomenon
However, skeptics offer numerous alternative explanations:
- Natural formations: Many alleged base locations are simply unusual but natural geological features
- Misidentified human activity: Military bases, mining operations, and other human activities can generate strange lights, sounds, and even craft
- Hoaxes and fabrications: Some claims, like elements of the Dulce base story, have been admitted fabrications
- Psychological factors: The human tendency toward pattern-seeking can transform mundane events into extraordinary narratives
- Government disinformation: Some whistleblower accounts may be deliberate disinformation to distract from conventional military activities
UAP investigator Mick West notes that evidence for underwater objects is "vastly less" than for aerial phenomena: "You can't see very far underwater, so there's no video or photos. There are only stories about anomalous sonar returns and occasional sightings that might as well be of sea monsters."
Yet the U.S. military appears to take these phenomena seriously enough to have formally expanded its investigation parameters. As noted earlier, in 2022 the Pentagon officially changed its terminology from "Unidentified Aerial Phenomena" to "Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena" specifically to include underwater and trans-medium objects.
Congressional interest has grown as well. During a House Oversight Committee hearing, Congresswoman Lauren Boebert specifically questioned witnesses about underwater civilizations: "Are there any accounts of UAPs emerging from or submerging into our waters which could indicate a base or presence beneath the ocean's surface?"
Rear Admiral Tim Gallaudet authored a white paper warning about USOs (Unidentified Submerged Objects): "These underwater anomalies jeopardize US maritime security, which is already weakened by our relative ignorance about the global ocean." He emphasized that "transmedium UAP and USOs should be elevated to national ocean research priorities."
Numerous military witnesses have reported being ordered to maintain silence about their encounters. The navy flight engineer who reported the Antarctic ice hole claimed his crew was confronted by officials who ordered them "never, ever to fly over that hole" and "never to discuss it again." Similar patterns of information control appear in accounts from personnel stationed near Dulce and other locations.
This pattern of information suppression extends beyond witness intimidation to apparent manipulation of public data. The removal or blurring of Sycamore Knoll from Google Earth after 2014 raises questions about why an underwater geological formation would require such treatment if it were indeed nothing more than a natural feature.
Linda Moulton Howe raises a pointed question: "Are we living at a time where keeping things like underground pyramids is considered a national security threat to our government if the truth is told?"
The Future of Underground UFO Research
The study of underground UFO phenomena stands at an interesting crossroads. Advances in technology are creating new opportunities for investigation, while growing institutional interest suggests the potential for more resources and attention directed toward these mysteries.
Several technological frontiers show particular promise:
- Advanced underwater detection: New generations of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) can reach depths previously inaccessible to humans, equipped with high-resolution sonar, camera systems, and environmental sensors
- Earth-penetrating technologies: Improvements in ground-penetrating radar, muon tomography, and seismic imaging allow increasingly detailed views beneath the surface
- Satellite monitoring: Advanced satellite systems with thermal, radar, and multispectral imaging capabilities can now detect subtle surface anomalies indicating subsurface features
- Quantum sensors: Emerging quantum technologies promise unprecedented sensitivity for detecting gravitational, magnetic, and other field disturbances that might reveal hidden structures
As Tim Gallaudet notes, the search for underwater UFO phenomena may yield important scientific discoveries regardless of their origin: "Any hunt for USOs or supporting undersea infrastructure will almost certainly identify new marine species, geologic features, and oceanic processes." This potential for ancillary scientific benefits may help legitimize research that might otherwise struggle for funding and institutional support.
For those drawn to the mysteries of underground UFO phenomena, the path forward requires both open-mindedness and rigorous skepticism – a willingness to consider extraordinary possibilities while demanding extraordinary evidence. The coming decades may finally shine light into the darkest corners of our planet, revealing whether anything truly unusual lurks beneath the surface.
Whether these phenomena represent extraterrestrial visitors, time-traveling humans, ancient advanced civilizations, entirely non-human Earth species, or simply misinterpreted natural and human activities remains an open question. What's clear is that the full story of what might exist in the caverns, depths, and hidden spaces of our planet continues to captivate researchers and the public alike.
