Inside Alien Underground Bases

By Malcolm Blackwood, Ufologist
In the shadowy realms of conspiracy theories and UFO research, few topics generate as much fascination and controversy as underground alien bases. Beneath the mountains and deserts of our world, an astonishing claim persists: vast networks of subterranean facilities where extraterrestrial beings conduct experiments, develop advanced technology, and occasionally clash with human military forces.
These aren't just isolated outposts, according to those who believe. They form an intricate global network—131 bases in the United States alone, with 1,477 worldwide, all connected by super-fast magnetic levitation trains traveling through tunnels melted through solid rock. If true, it would represent the most significant cover-up in human history.
But what's actually down there? Let's dig into the strange world of underground alien bases.
The Dulce Base: America's Underground Nightmare
The story begins in Dulce, New Mexico, an unassuming town of fewer than 3,000 residents near the Colorado border. Situated on the Jicarilla Apache Reservation, nothing about this settlement suggests anything extraordinary—at least on the surface. Yet according to UFO researchers, Dulce sits atop the most infamous alien installation in America, a place where the U.S. government allegedly collaborates with extraterrestrials in conducting horrific experiments on unwitting humans.
"The whole town of Dulce, whoever you want to talk to, they'll tell you what they've seen," local resident Geraldine Julian told reporters. "It's not just a fairy tale. All the things are true, and I believe every last one of them, too, because I've seen it myself."
The Dulce Base legend took root in 1975 when New Mexico State Trooper Gabriel Valdez investigated a bizarre cattle mutilation. The rancher who discovered his dead cow initially suspected predators, but what Valdez found defied conventional explanation. The animal had been surgically precise—organs removed, blood drained—with no signs of struggle or predator activity. Most disturbing were the strange markings around the carcass that suggested something had landed nearby.
"The evidence that was left there—you know, predators don't leave gas masks, glow sticks, radar chaff," Valdez later said. "They don't leave that stuff."
In the following months, dozens more cattle died under similar circumstances. Investigators visiting the sites reported falling ill with headaches and nausea. When Dr. Howard Burgess tested radiation levels in the area, he found them twice the normal amount. During nighttime investigations, researchers witnessed silent orange lights moving across the sky.
But it was physicist and businessman Paul Bennewitz who transformed these strange occurrences into a full-blown alien base theory. In the late 1970s, while operating his company near Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, Bennewitz began intercepting what he believed were electronic communications between aliens. After meeting Officer Valdez at a conference, Bennewitz became convinced of a massive extraterrestrial operation centered in Dulce.
His suspicions seemed confirmed in 1980 when he investigated the case of Myrna Hansen, who claimed she and her son had been abducted after witnessing a UFO lifting a cow into the air. Under hypnosis, Hansen described being taken to an underground facility where she saw human body parts floating in containers. She also claimed an implant was placed in her neck—a claim apparently verified when X-rays revealed an unexplained object at the exact location she described.
Seven Levels of Horror
According to whistleblowers and researchers, the Dulce Base consists of seven levels, each more disturbing than the last:
Level 1: Security and communications—the most "normal" floor, where human personnel monitor entrances and exits.
Level 2: Human staff housing—living quarters for the scientists and military personnel who work at the facility.
Level 3: Executive offices and the first research laboratories—where administration occurs and human and alien personnel begin to intermingle.
Level 4: Mind control experimentation—featuring technology for mental manipulation and behavior modification.
Level 5: Alien housing—living quarters for the extraterrestrial beings, primarily Greys and Reptilians.
Level 6: "Nightmare Hall"—genetic laboratories where humans, animals, and alien DNA are combined to create hybrid creatures. Security officer Thomas Castello allegedly reported seeing "multi-legged humans that look like half-human/half-octopus" and "furry creatures that have hands like humans and cry like babies."
Level 7: Cryogenic storage—where human, alien, and hybrid specimens are preserved in suspended animation.
The entire facility reportedly spans multiple miles underground, with technology far beyond conventional human capabilities. The construction itself allegedly involved advanced methods, with tunnels created not by drilling but through "laser technology that vitrified and melted its way through previously impenetrable rock."
The Battle of Dulce
Perhaps the most dramatic claim about Dulce comes from Phil Schneider, who identified himself as a former government engineer. According to Schneider, in 1979, he was working on expanding the underground facility when his team accidentally drilled into a large cavern inhabited by extraterrestrials.
"I was lowered into the hole and was expecting to see normal geology, and I found myself in the middle of a large cavern that was full of outer-space aliens, otherwise known as large Grey aliens," Schneider claimed in lectures before his death. "I shot two of them. At that time, there were 30 people down there. About 40 more came down after this started, and all of them got killed."
Schneider claimed he survived but lost several fingers when an alien fired a "plasma weapon" at him. According to his account, 66 human security personnel died in what became known as "The Battle of Dulce." Rather than abandoning the base afterward, Schneider said the U.S. government negotiated a treaty with the aliens, trading human test subjects for advanced technology.
"There's a war underneath there," Schneider warned audiences during his 1995 lectures. "And I'm talking dead serious."
For years, Schneider traveled the lecture circuit sharing his story and warning about the alien presence. He claimed to be under constant surveillance and told friends, "If I ever end up dead, I didn't kill myself." In January 1996, just months after his most public presentations, Schneider was found dead in his apartment with a rubber catheter wrapped around his neck. The official ruling was suicide—a finding his supporters vehemently reject.
Beyond Dulce: A Global Network of Alien Facilities
If believers are correct, Dulce represents just one node in a vast underground empire spanning the globe. These facilities allegedly exist beneath mountains, oceans, and even ice caps, connected by a sophisticated tunnel network.
Mount Shasta's Mysterious Inhabitants
In Northern California, Mount Shasta stands as another alleged alien headquarters. This 14,000-foot peak has inspired strange stories for thousands of years, with indigenous tribes considering it a place where "sky beings" descended to Earth.
"The local people believe that in ancient times the great sky chief Skell came down from the sky to live in Shasta and has been there ever since and protects it," explains one researcher.
Modern witnesses report seeing the mountain physically "open up" to admit spacecraft. Jack, a local witness, described his experience: "I looked up in the mountain and I seen the whole mountain towards Yreka side open up. And then this big ship came and sat there and hovered for a minute and went right in. And the next thing you know, the mountain closed..."
Investigators exploring caves on Mount Shasta's slopes have documented strong magnetic anomalies in the area. Local historian Dustin Naef notes, "There's an immense negative magnetic anomaly there that surrounds Mt. Shasta," potentially explaining the high levels of paranormal activity reported nearby.
Alaska's "Dark Pyramid"
In 1992, U.S. geologists reportedly detected a massive pyramidal structure buried beneath Mount Denali in Alaska. This object, dubbed the "Dark Pyramid," allegedly stands 550 feet tall, with its top just 150 feet below the surface.
Investigative journalist Linda Moulton Howe interviewed individuals claiming knowledge of this structure, including a man whose father allegedly worked inside it. According to this account, the pyramid contained offices monitoring enormous energy outputs—"enough to power the entire country of Canada."
What makes this claim particularly intriguing is that declassified CIA documents revealed Mount Hayes, just 130 miles away, was the focus of a top-secret government project called "Stargate." Some researchers claim these documents contain evidence of "an alien underground base in this area."
Antarctica: The Ultimate Hidden Location
Perhaps no location offers better concealment than Antarctica. With its extreme cold, isolation, and massive ice sheets, the frozen continent represents perfect cover for activities meant to remain undetected.
Reports of extraterrestrial facilities in Antarctica date back to the Nazi era, with claims that "the Nazis used U-boats to go down to Antarctica and explore it. Allegedly, they found some of these caverns beneath the ice and technology which perhaps came from extraterrestrials."
In 2019, Linda Moulton Howe interviewed a former Navy flight engineer who claimed to have seen a massive opening in the Antarctic ice while flying over a restricted "no-fly zone" in 1985. He described "a giant indentation that looked like a hole in the ice that looked like a snow ramp that went down into it"—something completely unexpected in the flat Antarctic landscape.
Underwater Bases
Not all claimed alien installations are beneath land. Many researchers suggest that extraterrestrials prefer underwater locations for their secretive operations. The vast, largely unexplored ocean depths provide perfect cover for advanced civilizations wishing to remain hidden.
In June 2023, U.S. Representative Tim Burchett made headlines by suggesting the existence of underwater alien bases. Burchett described being told by an admiral about "something's moving at hundreds of miles an hour underwater," specifically mentioning one craft "as large as a football field underwater."
Similar claims exist about Lake Titicaca in South America and other bodies of water where witnesses report seeing craft rapidly entering or emerging from beneath the surface.
Inside the Bases: Advanced Technology Beyond Human Understanding
What makes these underground bases particularly fascinating is the advanced technology allegedly developed and utilized within them. According to whistleblowers and researchers, these facilities operate using principles far beyond conventional human science.
Construction and Transportation
The very creation of these bases supposedly involves technology that defies our understanding of physics and engineering. A 1959 RAND Corporation symposium reportedly discussed "Tunnel-Boring Machines" that would "give [man] access to the Subterranean World."
This technology allegedly evolved into the "SUBTERRENE," described in a 1983 OMNI magazine article as "the Los Alamos nuclear-powered tunnel machine that burrows through the rock, deep underground, by heating whatever stone it encounters into molten rock (magma), which cools after the SUBTERRENE has moved on."
These tunnels allegedly connect various facilities through a sophisticated transportation system featuring "magnetic levitation trains that can travel at speeds of up to Mach 2," allowing rapid movement between different bases worldwide.
Inside the facilities themselves, conventional technology is supposedly absent:
"The elevators have no cables. They are controlled magnetically. The Magnetic system is inside the walls... All is controlled by advanced Magnetics. That includes a magnetically induced (phosphorescent) Illumination System. There are no regular light bulbs."
Security systems are equally advanced, with "scales built under the doorway, by the door control. The person's card must match with the weight and code or the door won't open." This prevents unauthorized access and ensures anything removed from sensitive areas is detected.
Energy Systems
The power requirements for maintaining vast underground complexes would be enormous, and various theories suggest exotic energy sources in use at these facilities. The "Dark Pyramid" in Alaska, for instance, is described as a power generation system producing unimaginable amounts of energy.
Other proposed power sources include zero-point energy (drawing power from quantum vacuum fluctuations), antimatter reactors, and even interdimensional energy taps that harness power from other realities. Whatever the source, the ability to generate massive amounts of power without detection represents technology far beyond current human capabilities.
Government Involvement: Black Budgets and Secret Treaties
The most disturbing aspect of underground base theories involves alleged government complicity. According to whistleblowers, elements within world governments have established working relationships with extraterrestrial beings, hiding these arrangements from the public.
The Black Budget
How could such massive installations remain secret? Theorists point to the "Black Budget"—classified spending hidden within regular military appropriations. Phil Schneider claimed that as of 1995, the underground base network received between $50-80 billion annually through this clandestine funding mechanism.
The construction and maintenance of these facilities allegedly involves major corporations working under extreme secrecy. The 1959 RAND Symposium on underground construction reportedly included representatives from "THE GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY, AT&T, HUGHES AIRCRAFT, NORTHROP CORP., SANDIA CORP., STANFORD RESEARCH INSTITUTE, WALSH CONSTRUCTION COMPANY, THE BECHTEL CORP..."
BECHTEL Corporation receives particular attention, described as "a supersecret international corporate octopus" that is "really a 'SHADOW GOVERNMENT' - a working arm of the CIA." According to these theories, "The most important posts in the US Government are held by former BECHTEL Officers."
Treaties with Extraterrestrials
Several accounts mention formal agreements between human governments and alien entities. According to Phil Schneider, four major treaties were signed in 1944, 1954, 1962, and 1979—the last one following the alleged "Battle of Dulce."
The 1954 agreement, sometimes called the "Greada Treaty," was supposedly signed between the U.S. government and Grey aliens. Under its terms, "aliens would be allowed to abduct and experiment on humans as long as the US government was informed and provided a list of abductees."
In exchange for these concessions, the government allegedly received advanced technology: "materials used in modern government aircraft came from alien technology." Military technology is claimed to be "1200 years ahead of what civilians have" thanks to this exchange program.
Inside Operations: The Dark Purpose of Underground Facilities
What exactly happens inside these alleged facilities? According to witnesses and researchers, the activities range from technological development to horrific biological experimentation.
Genetic Experimentation
Multiple sources claim that genetic research, particularly the creation of human-alien hybrids, is a primary focus of these underground bases. According to one account, "We Cloned 'our' own little Humanoids" using "a process perfected in the Bio-Genetic Research Center of the World, Los Alamos!" These created beings allegedly serve as "disposable slave-race" for dangerous experiments.
Other reported activities include:
- Genetic manipulation and DNA programming
- Implantation of brain transceivers for control and monitoring
- Development of "biological plasma" technology that can "change the 'genetic structure' and 'HEAL'"
- Storage of "embryos of Humanoids in various stages of development"
The motivation for this genetic research allegedly stems from the aliens' own biological problems. According to some theories, extraterrestrial races view humans as a "food source"—not for flesh but for hormones and enzymes. "The species of aliens suffers from a genetic disorder and the enzymes in mammal hormones keep the aliens healthy and some alien races use human adrenaline as a recreational intoxicant."
Mind Control Research
Another alleged focus involves technologies to manipulate human consciousness. The Dulce Base is said to house research into "RHIC (Radio-Hypnotic Intercerebral Control) and EDOM (Electronic Dissolution of Memory)"—technologies purportedly used to influence and control human behavior.
These mind control technologies allegedly include:
- Brain implants that allow remote monitoring and control
- Devices that can erase or modify memories
- Technology to induce specific emotional states or behaviors
- Systems for long-distance mental influence
The Question of Evidence
Despite decades of claims about underground alien bases, definitive proof remains elusive. What evidence supports these extraordinary allegations, and what contradicts them?
The Case for Underground Bases
Proponents point to several categories of evidence:
Eyewitness testimony: The sheer number of individuals claiming knowledge of underground facilities creates an impression of substantiation. When military personnel, local residents, and even elected officials discuss these possibilities, it adds perceived credibility.
Unusual phenomena: Clusters of strange events, like cattle mutilations near Dulce or UFO sightings around Mount Shasta, create patterns that demand explanation. Underground bases provide a comprehensive framework connecting these disparate occurrences.
Government secrecy: Documented cases of government deception regarding UFOs and classified projects lend plausibility to claims of greater secrets. When organizations like the CIA acknowledge running psychological operations involving UFO reports, it becomes easier to believe they might be hiding more significant truths.
Actual underground facilities: The documented existence of genuine deep underground military installations provides a foundation for more elaborate theories. Cold War-era facilities show that the government does indeed construct secret underground complexes.
The Skeptical Perspective
Critics highlight several problems with the available evidence:
Inconsistent accounts: Details often vary significantly between different witnesses, with descriptions of base layouts, alien types, and activities changing over time and between sources.
Problematic witnesses: Several key figures in the underground base narrative have proven unreliable in other claims. Phil Schneider's biography, for instance, contains demonstrable inaccuracies, such as his claims about his father's Nazi U-boat service.
Admitted disinformation: The acknowledged involvement of intelligence agencies in spreading false information about aliens makes separating truth from fiction particularly challenging. Richard Doty, an Air Force Office of Special Investigations agent, admitted to deliberately feeding false information to UFO researchers.
Lack of physical evidence: Despite claims of stolen photographs and documents, no verified physical evidence of underground alien bases has emerged. Images purporting to show base interiors have frequently been debunked as coming from science fiction films or other sources.
Logical problems: The scale and complexity of the alleged base network would require enormous resources and perfect secrecy—a combination many skeptics find implausible.
The Psychological Pull of Underground Mysteries
Regardless of their reality, underground alien base theories exert a powerful psychological attraction. The concept of hidden facilities beneath our feet speaks to deep human fascinations with the unknown.
Mountains have been objects of veneration and mystery throughout human history, seen as places where the divine and the earthly meet. Great mountains "reach to the heavens" and contain "hidden crevices and caves," making them natural focal points for stories about otherworldly beings.
The underground itself carries powerful symbolic significance across cultures—representing both the hidden and the forbidden. From Hades to Hollow Earth theories, humans have long imagined significant domains beneath the surface.
This psychological resonance helps explain why underground base theories persist despite the lack of definitive evidence. They satisfy our need for comprehensive explanations of mysterious phenomena while tapping into archetypal fears and fascinations.
Tourism and Cultural Impact
Whatever the reality behind the legends, places like Dulce have embraced their reputation as UFO hotspots. The town hosts the annual Dulce Base UFO Conference, attracting enthusiasts from across the country. Local businesses like the "Dulce Base Tipi" explicitly market to tourists interested in the area's UFO connections.
The Jicarilla Apache community has had mixed reactions to the attention. While some residents dismiss the stories as fiction, others believe there's truth to them. Tourism brings economic benefits, but some worry about disrespect to sacred tribal lands.
Meanwhile, the search for evidence continues. Modern technology has made investigating claims easier in some ways—Google Earth now allows anyone to examine the topography of claimed base locations, though believers suggest that entrances are carefully concealed or digitally removed from satellite imagery.
Possibilities: What Might Be True?
The underground base narrative spans a spectrum of possibilities:
Complete fiction: The entire phenomenon could be fabricated through hoaxes, misidentifications, and psychological factors.
Misidentified human activities: Genuine classified underground military facilities might be misinterpreted as alien bases. The U.S. government does maintain numerous Deep Underground Military Bases (DUMBs) for various purposes.
Disinformation covering other secrets: Intelligence agencies might promote alien base stories to distract from conventional but classified military activities.
Partial truth: Some aspects of the underground base narrative might contain elements of truth mixed with exaggeration, misinterpretation, and deliberate obfuscation.
Completely factual: Though considered the least likely scenario by mainstream science, the underground base network might exist largely as described by believers.
Whatever the case, underground alien bases remain one of the most persistent and elaborate narratives in UFO lore. They combine elements of government conspiracy, extraterrestrial contact, and hidden knowledge into a comprehensive framework that continues to captivate the imagination.
As technology advances and government disclosure continues, we may someday learn the full truth about what, if anything, lies beneath places like Dulce, Mount Shasta, or the Antarctic ice. Until then, the underground base legend continues to evolve, capturing imagination and raising profound questions about what might exist just beyond our everyday perception.
